The Grow Series

The Grow Series will start on January 7 at Praise.  Join us for four weeks as we look at four of the ways we are called to be disciples of Christ.  I’m really excited for this series–whether you are a new or mature Christian, you’ll have the opportunity to be challenged and encouraged in these four areas of growth.  Don’t miss it!

Love And Respect – Week 4

Today we completed our series of sermons on love and respect, with Pastor Ryan speaking principally to women on ‘Reaching His Heart’ – 6 key areas that motivate your husband. Men spell respect like this: Conquest, hierarchy, authority, insight, relationship and sexuality. The slides are here:

As before, this sermon series is based on the DVDs made by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs. His site is here: Love And Respect, where you can download the podcasts, buy books and DVDs of the material.

Next week Pastor Ryan will begin the next series on the teachings of Christ: ‘The Gifts of Jesus’, which will lead us up to Easter.

Family Life Conferences

As we wind up our Love & Respect Series this coming Sunday, you may be interested in attending a marriage seminar to keep working at your relationship with your spouse.  We considered hosting a video conference at PCF but decided against it as we saw the reach and impact we were having with our sermon series, Sunday school classes, and small groups.  If you are interested in attending a conference, though, here are some options for you:

Family Life’s “The Art of Marriage” video conference dates & locations

Information on all of Family Life’s marriage conferences

See you this Sunday for the wrap-up of our series!

Love And Respect – Week 2

Continuing our series of sermons on love and respect, today I spoke on ‘the Crazy Cycle’ – how we act on it, how we get off it, and how to avoid getting on at all. The slides are here:

Download (PPT, 518KB)

Next week, Judy will be talking to husbands about how to reach your wife’s heart, and Pastor Ryan will end the series by speaking to the wives about how to reach your husband’s heart. These last two sermons get very specific about what motivates your spouse, and what makes him/her so very different to you.

Again, during the sermon I promised you a link to the DVD series site – here it is:

Love And Respect – Week 1

Our sermon series called ‘Love and Respect – from Crazy Bad to Crazy Good’ is now in full swing, based on the DVD series of the same name. We’ve taken it, compressed it in some areas to fit to four sermons (not an easy task!). The material was developed by Dr Emerson Eggerichs, and The slides are here:

Next week, I’ll be talking about the Crazy Cycle – how we get on it, how to get off it and how to stay off it. The week after that, Judy will be talking to husbands about how to reach your wife’s heart, and Pastor Ryan will end the series by speaking to the wives about how to reach your husband’s heart. These last two sermons get very specific about what motivates your spouse, and what makes him/her so very different to you.

During the sermon, I promised you a couple of links – here they are:

Sunday Worship at PCF

Hey everybody!  This Sunday will be a great one–we start the morning with Sunday school for all ages (even nursery care for ages 0-3) at 9am, and we’ll be worshipping at 10:30am.  I’m excited for this message because Pastor Kevin Skaret will be preaching about the Holy Spirit.  I got to hear Pr. Kevin, our youth director, do a run-through of his sermon today and I’m excited for everyone to hear it.  Lastly, after the service, we’ll have refreshments and a business meeting at 12:15pm.  The meeting includes some important business, so I hope you can stay.  See you in the morning!

GOING-from hurting to loving

Yesterday’s sermon was a change in our plans for the GOING series.  We dealt with a topic that needed to be addressed.  It’s an issue in all of our lives–conflict.  Conflict is a necessary part of life and can be good, but oftentimes we handle it very poorly.  Conflict occurs at work, at church, and at home, and we can either respond in a loving, healthy way or respond in a hurtful way.

This is one sermon I’d like everyone at Praise to listen to–you can download it here, and the slides are here:

Download (PPT, 318.5KB)

Here are some of the hurtful ways we respond to conflict–these hurt ourselves and others, and we called them all “conflict garbage”:

  • we run away and try to avoid it (note the “try” part)
  • we shut down and try to not deal with it
  • we gossip or slander about it
  • we make lists of grudges we have against people
  • we over-react by being “offended” to our core at the slightest suggestion we may be at fault

The healthy way to respond is to go directly to the person that has offended us and share how we feel.  We also need to be ready to acknowledge our own faults in the situation.  This can be so hard, though!  Thankfully Christ has given us his love which heals, forgives, and showers us with grace.

Questions to ponder….

  • Why is it so tempting to gossip?
  • What hurtful response to conflict do you find yourself resorting to use?
  • What do you find difficult about approaching conflict in a loving, assertive, honest way?
  • Read Matthew 18:15-17.  What is the process we should follow in healthy confrontation?

A next step..

The next time someone brings you their conflict garbage, will you take it and pass it along or will you encourage them to respond to conflict in a healthy way?

GOING-from tidy to messy

Today was the sixth of eight sermons in the GOING series – the point centered around the fact that living a full life is a messy business, and never more so than when raising children. We’ve completed a section of talks where we went from the birth of the nation of Israel to the point where we see we must take the mission of Christ very seriously. In this sermon we began talking about things we must do as a group – teaching our children has a very high priority.

Here are the Powerpoint slides…

Download (PPT, 246KB)

… and the audio will be posted here.

We used statistics from George Barna’s site here.

This should also interest parents and Christian educators.

Don’t forget – we’ll be covering this at Small Group of Wednesday morning and evening – all are welcome.

Here are some questions to mull over – please leave a comment as well:

  1. What can you do as a parent to connect your children to the grace of God?
  2. What can Praise do as a church to help you?
